Major Gap in Wellness Programs

In the world of corporate wellness, many programs focus on standard health metrics: biometrics, smoking cessation, nutrition, and physical activity. These have become the bread-and-butter of employee wellness initiatives. Yet, despite increasingly sophisticated programs, a significant problem persists — a gap in impact and meaningful change. That’s the crux of what Dr. Dee Edington and Angela Camilleri raised in their “Life Skills for Success” work, highlighted by CoreHealth.

What Is the “Major Gap”?

  • Limited Measurable Impact: Even after decades of running wellness programs, Edington noted a lack of compelling, consistent evidence showing that these efforts make employees substantially healthier.

  • Healthy-but-risky Population Neglected: Many programs rightly focus on high-risk individuals (e.g., those with chronic disease or elevated health risk), but they often overlook the “well-but-not-optimal” group — employees who appear healthy but could benefit from proactive wellness.

  • Psychosocial Dimension Underemphasized: Traditional wellness efforts tend to emphasize physical health (exercise, diet), but give less space to internal, psychological components like mindfulness, intention, and positive psychology — variables strongly linked to long-term well-being and resilience.

  • Behavior Change Without Depth: Many programs offer resources (fitness challenges, stress workshops) but don’t necessarily support deep, self-reflective growth or ongoing behavior change rooted in an individual’s values.

The gap inspired Edington Associates to turn its focus to ‘mindfulness’ and ‘intention’.

Once the Edington Associates team was clear about the concepts they wanted to represent, the real challenge came in putting together a design that captured all of the scientific research while keeping it relatable for employees of different backgrounds, interests and levels of health. The next goal was to create a unique user experience that allows participants to embrace these valuable concepts in a personal and meaningful way.

Edington Associates researched the science behind positive psychology, and learned from the premises of flourishing, becoming our best and recognizing personal strengths, in order to create a tool that could be accessed by anybody, anywhere. ‘Life Skills for Success’ was born!

Thinking beyond the scope of traditional wellness programs, Edington Associates partnered with CoreHealth Technologies to deliver their innovative program.
